I recorded another podcast with SJ Hill and Dr Stephen R. Crosby last week and posted it live this morning. There are a lot of “controversial” topics and grey areas in the Bible that are seldom talked about from many pulpits. I’ve got lots of these on my mind I’m itching to get recording, and have less time than I used to when I pelted this podcast out on a more regular and consistent basis. That being said, as we all got talking over Skype last Friday morning, this subject seemed to emerge to the forefront so we went for it.
We asked the question “revive what?”. What is revival and what is being revived? We cut through the buzzwords and discuss what this is and what it looks like in the Scriptures. We get into asking these questions from the get-go and dive into ‘outpouring’ versus discipleship. If a real outpouring happened, would we be ready? Would we even really want it? What if God actually answered our romanticized prayers for a revival? Would we be ready for it?
In this conversation we talk about the issue from a grace-based, new covenant perspective, rather than the straining, striving, performance-based, “What is it going to take to get God to do what we think He ought to do?” perspective, give it a listen.
I think as we closed off, I had some personal observations and conclusions I’ve been thinking; if what we’ve been doing with all our methods and activities all these years to see a revival happen would actually work, then we’d see revival already! I know people who’ve been ‘contending’ [in prayer] for revival for years and years, but in my personal estimation are little different from other Pentecostals and Charismatics who aren’t “contending”.
If what we did worked, we’d see results by now, I’m sure. Wouldn’t we?
But instead, our prayer meetings more or less resemble the Baal worshippers on Mount Carmel cutting themselves and striving all day long to get their god to show up but seeing no evidence of anything different.
What we really need is Elijahs who can step up, and call down the fire of God that burns up our silly little man-made efforts, and make an eternal impact in the land. Much of what I’ve seen instead resembles hype.
Oh Lord, please, send revival–change OUR hearts that we’d fully rest in you and make disciples who do the same!
