This week on the podcast I am privileged to have an interview with a friend and former teacher of mine in my days at FIRE School of Ministry named Bert Farias. He and his son Daniel recently co-wrote a book called My Son, My Son: Fathering and Training a Holy Generation.
It was an honor to be able to talk to Brother Bert Farias in this capacity. I remember being a little intimidated by him in my days in Bible college (which in all honesty, I was intimidated by all of my teachers because I had such respect for them as men of God). In recent years we have connected more on Facebook and have had a skype call earlier this year before our daughter was born. So this was a thrill to be able to get to do this.
Takeaways from the discussion:
Did you know over 95% of prison inmates never had any meaningful relationship with their fathers? If you’ve been in Christian circles for very long, you’ve probably already heard that this generation is a fatherless generation. Talking to Brother Bert and hearing his insights further underscored the importance of godly parenting, starting at a young age.
As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure, and Brother Bert shares a lot of powerful insights, especially geared at new or younger parents.
When you listen to today’s show, you’ll be listening to an older wiser experienced father share personally with a newbie and publicly with today’s audience.
We also get Bert’s thoughts on the controversial and divisive topic of spanking. Is it Biblical or is it abusive?
Bert’s Book, My Son, My Son: Fathering and Training a Holy Generation
Here’s a beautiful story of the miraculous fulfillment of a promised son’s entrance into the world to the season of the son’s departure from home—a joyful journey that takes you into the heart of a loving relationship between a father and a son.
This book is one of the most unique books on father-son relationships you will ever find. Co-written by father and son, it has a personal touch and intimate tone that will leave you teary-eyed one moment and then rejoicing the next. Within its pages you will find a spiritual quality of training and a godly example of shepherding children that will both enrich and empower parents. It also offers hope for those parents who have fallen short or started late in their child training.
Experience the power and the promise of fathers who fear the Lord.
“Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments. His descendants will be mighty on earth…” (Ps. 112:1-2).
Fathers, your son (or daughter) is typically in your home for an average of 18-20 years before he ventures out independently to navigate his own little boat in this world’s turbulent waters. Until then, with God’s help, you, more than anyone else, have the greatest opportunity to shape him and mold him into the man he will eventually become. You’ve got one shot at being a father.
Make it count.
